Web Services

The "Web services" function allows you to define settings for the individual web services of the portal.

For each web service, you can see the current status of the web service.

You can see for each web service what the current status of the web service is.

The list has a menu option (expand for configuration) for each one of the individual web services. This option will indicate the current web service status with the use of an icon. Following are the corresponding status icons:

SymbolDescription
The web service is enabled and is running correctly
The web service has been disabled (paused)
The web service is not available with the current license
Web service error
Unknown web service status
caution

If a web service is not available, then the corresponding functions in the portal are also disabled.

For a detailed error analysis, please check the webPDF server logs.

In addition to the simple activation or deactivation of the web service via "Web service enabled", various settings are available that apply to all web services.

caution

In the case of certain web services, you will not be able to enable them until the underlying service has been tested successfully.

Instances

Number of instances

Use this value to specify the maximum number of instances that are allowed to run at the same time. By doing so, you can define the maximum number of requests that can be handled simultaneously by the web service. This allows you to influence the performance of the server.

Please note:

a) That every additional instance will require additional memory and that this might make it necessary to modify the server's memory allocation settings (see ".vmoptions").

b) That the number of instances should be set in relation to the number of processor cores available on a system. The following rule of thumb applies:

Instances = Number of processor cores x 2

c) That the max. number of instances is limited by the license.

Max. number of requests in the queue

If an instance reaches this number of requests, the current instance will be closed and replaced with a new instance.

Max. runtime of an instance**

Use this value (in seconds) to specify the maximum runtime for an individual process within an instance. If this time is exceeded, the process will be cancelled.

caution

When you disable a web service, none of the functions connected with it are available any longer.

Special settings

Settings "Font path" for "Converter" and "PDF/A"

For these two web services, you can also specify a font path which serves as the basis for the search for fonts. Normally, you do not need to provide any input here because webPDF automatically uses the system-specific directories (Linux: /usr/share/fonts/; Windows: c:\windows). Input is only necessary, for example under Linux, if the sum of all directories exceeds 256 characters. In this case, use the setting to specify a different base directory which contains fewer subdirectories.

Settings for “URL”

You can also define a time limit for the web service URL (in milliseconds) indicating when a page is considered to be unreachable and thus the URL conversion fails.

Settings for "Converter

You can also use SharePoint for the conversion with the Converter web service. To do this, enter your SharePoint URL, username, and password. For more details, please refer to the SharePoint Bridge chapter.

If you have Microsoft Office installed on the server, you can use it directly for Office formats. To do this, enable the Enable Office Bridge option. Click on the Test button to check whether the connection worked.

You can use the Chromium bridge to convert various HTML-based formats (this option will be enabled by default). If you do not want Chromium to search for an available port automatically for the conversion, you can assign one here instead (0 in order for a port to be assigned automatically).
