Update to webPDF 10
General
The following notes refer to an update from webPDF 7, 8 and 9 to the current version 10.
If possible, you should install the new version on a test system before updating to ensure that the connection to or integration into your production systems will also function technically and in terms of content after the update.
We provide the current version (for production and test systems) for the various platforms via the Download page:
Data backup
Please always backup the current installation before an update or make sure that the backups of the current version are available and working. Additionally, back up the configuration directories of webPDF before an update.
The configuration is located in the folder C:\ProgramData\webPDF for a Windows installation and directly in the installation folder /opt/webpdf for a Linux installation.
Backup the folders conf/ (configuration files), keystore/ (certificates) and (optionally) and logs (the historical logs).
Compatibility
Version 10 is interoperable with the previous version 9 in terms of the REST and SOAP web service API.
However, there are new features and “important changes” that may require adjustments to the configuration or the web service requests to use these new functions.
Be sure to read the changelog for version 10.
If you are using webPDF in conjunction with a third-party application, check whether the vendor's application is compatible with the current webPDF version before updating. To do this, contact the manufacturer of the application.
Check the general technical requirements of the current version.
Below you will find the appropriate instructions for performing an update under Windows and Linux.
Update Windows
When updating the main version, the previous version must be uninstalled. Therefore, first perform the De-Installation of the current version.
If you perform an update within a version, then the uninstallation is not necessary.
Make sure that the webPDF server is not running during the uninstallation, i.e. stop the Windows or Linux service before starting the uninstallation.
Keep the runtime data during the de-installation, because they will be taken over after the update to the current version. So do not activate the option Remove runtime data during the de-installation.
After the de-installation you can install the new version with the installer.
After the installation (if not disabled during the installation) the webPDF server starts as a service automatically.
At startup, the old configuration is adopted and adjusted. After starting the webPDF server, check the settings and the accessibility of the server. You can use the Admin Portal of the server for this.
Update Linux
On Linux, webPDF is installed via the package manager of the respective Linux distribution. We provide a repository for this purpose via the page https://packages.softvision.de/.
You will find the appropriate instructions on the repository home page on how to include the webPDF package in the package manager of the respective distribution.
Under Linux, no prior de-installation is necessary.
To update webPDF, enter the new version in your package manager and update the package manager so that it updates the package source and detects the new webPDF version.
Please make sure that your Linux distribution is supported and that you are using the latest version of the distribution.
Please update your distribution to the latest version before installing webPDF and also make sure that you use the latest package sources.
Update the webPDF package via the Package Manager so that the current webPDF version is set up.
Please note that the webPDF server will be stopped during setup and will be temporarily unavailable.
If the webPDF server was set up to start automatically, it will be started again automatically after setup. Otherwise, please start the service manually. At startup, the old configuration will be adopted and adjusted.
After starting the webPDF server, check the settings and the accessibility of the server. You can use the Admin Portal of the server for this purpose.
